The Signed Prints series are some of my favorite paintings from the last few years, hand-numbered and signed by myself.
"Ink monster #666. Sweet Lord Satan in his grace!
When I draw something that I suspect has spiritual value, I often end the drawing with an enso, a circle appropriated from Zen buddhist art, to see if the Gods, the Fates, or Chance herself accepts my offering. If I don’t manage to draw the enso to my satisfaction, I have to tear up the art. I didn’t make the rules, I only made the rules.
With this one I decided to start with the enso, black it out and draw the drawing on top of it. And since the enso worked, the art absolutely had to work.
But it didn’t work. I poured and painted with acrylic, and nothing worked. I dried it with a blow dryer, and tried again. And again. The paper became this and bumpy with all the layers of dried and cracked acrylic.
And suddenly this face appeared, almost finishing itself. I placed two white dots in the eyes, and he came alive. To this day, people always comment how alive he looks.
So you know… I guess Satan approved."
